Growing in Winter

With winter well and truly upon us I know how appealing a cosy couch, warm blanket and a cup of tea sounds.  But wait...winter is the perfect time to rug up and get busy in the garden.  There are plenty of projects to keep you warm.
  
Spring bulbs are popping through the soil and don’t worry if you forgot to plant some we have potted bulbs in store now! For better growth and flowers apply a liquid fertiliser fortnightly and place potted bulbs in full sun.
 
Winter is also the time for pruning back roses to reshape and promote a stunning show of spring and summer blooms.  Don’t be shy, they will love it!  Don’t forget to remove any old decaying leaves that may be harbouring black spot and overwintering pests.  It is best to dispose of these in the rubbish and not in the compost.   June is also the best time to plant new roses and with over 40 varieties in stock, there is plently to choose from.  Come in and speak with the staff to find the perfect rose for you.

If you have ever found yourself feeling a little disappointed with the flavour of store brought fruit, why not grow your own and remember what fruit really tastes like.  Now is the perfect time for planting bare rooted trees.  For those short on space, we have plenty of dwarf and miniature fruit trees in the nursery to choose from including pears, apples, nectarines and peaches...yum!
 
In the vegie patch get busy planting broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and brussels sprouts.  Why not try some broad beans, spinach and spring onions too.  Winter is also the perfect time to plant a couple of rhubarb crowns.  Pick a sunny well drained area and incorporate some rotted compost or manure.  With a little love you will be enjoying delicious rhubarb crumble in no time!

After a busy day in the garden, kick off your boots, put the kettle on and sit back and enjoy what you have just created!
