Growing in Autumn

Autumn is here and even though it feels more like winter, there is still plently to do in the garden.  After such a wet and warm spring now is the perfect time to cut back and tidy up the garden. 

Autumn is a great time to give the whole garden a good feed with an organic fertiliser and to replenish the soil with some well rotted compost or manure.  This helps to keep the moisture in the soil and to provide the essential nutrients your plants need to stay healthy.

In the veggie patch, it’s time to dig in some organic compost and think about replanting for the cooler months ahead. Now is the time to plant snow peas, broad beans, broccoli, lettuce, silver beet, cabbage, kale and cauliflower.  You can also give some of the Asian Greens a try.  Keep an eye out for the white cabbage butterfly who likes to lay her eggs on tender new growth of the leafy greens.  If little holes appear check for little green caterpillars and treat with Dipel or get the kids to squish them!

It’s also time to think about brightening up those grey days with some winter colour such as pansies, primulas, sweet peas, cinerarias and poppies.   Bulbs are another great way to bring colour to the garden and there is nothing more exciting than to see the first shoots of daffodils poking their heads through the soil!   We have a great range of bulbs in stock now ready for your garden.

So get your boots on, get those tools out of the shed and get busy!!
